On Line Evening 25/02/2014

Post by Phantom » 21 Feb 2014, 19:17

Why is it that the proverbial “paw paw” always hits the fan when the weather is at its worst?

The SAVAF helicopter squadron have been asked to assist in the urgent airlift of all the crew members of a cargo ship under way to the north off the coast at Durban. It is believed that all the crew members have become seriously ill from food poisoning, and are unable to operate the ship any more. The helicopter squadron will have to collect a fresh crew first, then locate the cargo ship at sea, perform a transfer, then fly the sick crew to hospital.

The Captain of the cargo ship managed to send off a message before he apparently slipped into a coma that the ship was on auto pilot on a course of roughly 095*, making 15Knots. Last known position for the vessel of about 30mins ago was S31*02.41’E32*23.27’. The ship is identified as a blue freighter with the words “Goliath Cement” boldly painted on its hull.

The only problem is that the weather is not conducive to flying. However the SAVAF squadron, always keen, super efficient and brave must endure and take up the challenge....

Scramble from Virginia (FAVG) and collect the new crew from the harbour at Durban. Route to position S31*02.41’E32*23.27’ and locate the stricken vessel. Drop off the fresh crew and collect the sick ones. Route back to Durban to the hospital to drop them off, then recover to Virginia (FAVG).

Take off from Virginia (FAVG) and route to the harbour mouth to the Harbour Fire Station and land.
Load up the group of crew members there and route to position S31*02.41’E32*23.27’.
Look for and locate the vessel.
Hover over the vessel and perform the crew change over.
When complete, route back to Durban and land at Addington Hospital to drop off the sick crew.
Once completed, route back to Virginia (FAVG) and land.

Debrief: Operation "Sierra Romeo"

Six able and willing SAVAF pilots reported for duty on a wet and misty morning. The Squad took off from FAVG a tad late at 18h20, and routed to the fire station at the harbour mouth. The crew members were successfully picked up.

From there, under the able leadership of een van onse nuwe Kapteins, Kous, the flight routed out to the last known position of the ship, and not too much later, it was spotted.

The fresh crew were successfully dropped, and the casevac performed faultlessly. From there the flight routed to Addington Hospital, dropping off the sick crew, and finally all safely recovered to FAVG.

Well done to the pilots who took part:
ZAV32 Maj Genl Jan (Smokey) Jacobs
ZAV64 Col Eddy (Phantom) Evans
ZAV70 Lt Col Nico (Sidewinder) Engelbrecht
ZAV92 Capt Hugo (Ironman) Nel
ZAV96 Capt Noel (Falcor) Grieve
ZAV97 Capt Krause (Kous) Venter
