OPERATION “EYEBALL”

Background:

Intel has been received of some spy ship activity off the coast in the Vredendal area. Locals report of sightings of light vessels, similar to fishing boats, acting in a strange manner.

High Command are concerned about this activity and have mobilized the SAVAF to go and investigate. The Heli Squad’s aircraft are parked at the Olifants River mouth since a deployment there not so long ago, and are on standby, along with a contingent of SA soldiers.

The Squad will have to fly asap to the mouth in fixed wing aircraft and fetch the helicopters first, then go and investigate. The last report was of the boats operating some 50Nm offshore roughly west of Vredendal.

Objective:

Scramble from AFB Ysterplaat and fly north to land on the beach at the Olifants River mouth. Recover the helicopters, load the troops and fly out to look for the boats and investigate. Recover to AFB Langebaan.

Orders:

Scramble from AFB Ysterplaat (FAYP) using C209 light aircraft.

Route north hdg 016* and 98Nm to the Olifants River mouth.

Land on the beach at the safest place.

Change over to the Pumas/A109’s standing in the area, and scramble again.

Route 290* and keep a look out for any shipping activity.

If found, hover over them and investigate. If necessary, drop the troops off on the boats to take care of matters from there.

When complete, route 170* to recover at AFB Langebaan (FALW).

Debrief: Operation "Eyeball"

Five Pilots arrived at the apron at Ysterplaat.

Take off was a bit late at 18h20, due to some issues, however the pilots set off for the Olifants River mouth with gusto.

All arrived safely to land on the beach (Not without the odd go around), and after loading the eager troops into the heli's, the Squad set off west to look for suspicious fishing boats. A group of rather shabby looking boats were found, and the troops were air dropped onto them for further action.

From there the Squad routed to Langebaan to land safely.

Thank you to the pilots who took part:

ZAV32 Genl Jan (Smokey) Jacobs
ZAV64 Maj Genl Eddy (Phantom) Evans
ZAV70 Col Nico (Sidewinder) Engelbrecht
ZAV117 Maj Nico (Brownman) De Lange
