On Line Evening 08/10/2013

Post by Phantom » 06 Oct 2013, 12:49

A group of scientists have been conducting some important research in the Gouritz River area into the effects of pollution in that river.

However major rainfall inland has caused the river to rise alarmingly, and has put the scientists at risk.

Furthermore, the scientists back up helicopter, which was in the process of evacuating the scientists to ZAV Heli Base 3, experienced engine problems and has crashed somewhere en route. It is believed that all on board survived.

The SAVAF HQ has received a plea for assistance in rescuing the scientists.

It is fortunate that the SAVAF helicopter squadron has been operating close by in the Mossel Bay area, and are able to render assistance.

Take off from Mossel Bay, and route to the Gouritz River mouth, then inland along the river to look for the scientists. Search further along a road for the downed helicopter and assist as required. Drop off the rescued scientists at ZAV Heli Base 3, and then recover to George.

There are many other people along the route who are in some distress, but your task is to identify, and only pick up the scientists!

Take off from Mossel Bay, and route south to intercept the coastline, climbing to 1000’AGL.
Turn west to follow the coast to the Gouritz River mouth (approximately 17Nm south west of Mossel Bay).
At the river mouth turn inland and follow the river upstream, descending to 500’AGL, and no faster than 100-110Kts. Maintain a line abreast formation, and look out for the scientists’ river camp.
When found, land and pick up the stranded scientist/s.
Continue upstream along the Gouritz River until it passes through the second, deeper mountain cutting, approximately 30Nm inland from the river mouth.
Once through the mountain pass keep a lookout for a small gravel road that crosses the river.
Follow the road to the east, keeping a lookout for the downed helicopter, its crew and the scientist/s.
Once found, land and pick up the survivors. Tune your ADF to 103.0 for ZAV Heli Base3.
Continue along the gravel road past a T junction, keeping roughly in an easterly direction. At the second T junction, keep left and follow the road still in a roughly easterly direction until the road comes to an end.
Fly approximately 110* until the road begins again. Keep following the road until a Y junction is reached.
Keep left at the Y junction and fly up through the mountain pass until the gravel road reaches a tar road.
Follow the ADF indication to ZAV Heli Base 3.
Route to ZAV Heli Base 3, and land in teams of two to offload the scientists.
Once complete, recover to George (FAGG) heading approximately 150* and 13Nm.

Debrief: Operation "Einstein"

It was very heartening to see six SAVAF pilots report for duty at Mossel Bay for the event.

Take off was a tad late at 18h20z, but the mission went off very well.

The scientists were duly rescued and flown to ZAV Heli Base03, and dropped off. Some very "interesting" landings were seen at the base, as the landing spots were very difficult to touch down on!!

All the aircraft recovered safely to George.

Thank you to the pilots who took part:

ZAV13 Genl Corney (Knight) Keller (Thank you for joining Sir!)
ZAV32 Maj Genl Jan (Smokey) Jacobs
ZAV64 Col Eddy (Phantom) Evans
ZAV52 Lt Col Charl (Skyfly) Randall (welcome back Sir!!)
ZAV43 Lt Marshall (Axper) Krieger
ZAV92 2Lt Hugo (Iron Man) Nel.

Below some screen shots of the event:
