On Line Evening 05/11/2013

Post by Phantom » 01 Nov 2013, 19:46

Background :

The SAVAF are once again on show!

A group of foreign dignitaries visiting the country are keen to see firsthand the navigational and bombing expertise of the crack SAVAF fighter bomber squadron. After some important high level talks in Bloemfontein, HQ have decided to put on a “show” for the dignitaries at the De Brug bombing range just outside Bloemfontein.

The Bomber squad is to take off from AFB Waterkloof (FAWK) and perform a low level nav excercise along a route to end up at De Brug at a specific time. Each waypoint will be overflown at a specific time as well. Timing will be of the essence if we are to impress the dignitaries! This will be an early morning mission, with a pre dawn take off.

Objective :

Scramble from AFB Waterkloof (FAWK) and route to De Brug bombing range along a specified route. Each waypoint will be reached at an exact time. Once complete the squad will recover to AFB Bloemspruit (FABL).

Orders :

Scramble from AFB Waterkloof (FAWK) at EXACTLY 18h00z.
Route to the following waypoints not above 500’ AGL and 250KIAS and in close formation: Scheepers Lodge (FA90), Carletonville (FACR), Potchefstroom (FAPS), Bothaville (FABO), Bloemhof (FABK), Kimberley (FAKM), De Brug (S29*07.70’ E25*49.75’).
Recover to AFB Bloemspruit (FABL).

The following times must be achieved over each waypoint:

Scheepers Lodge (FA90): 18h11z
Carletonville (FACR): 18h16z
Potchefstroom (FAPS): 18h21z
Bothaville (FABO): 18h32z
Bloemhof (FABK): 18h44min30sec
Kimberley (FAKM): 19h04min45sec
Time over Target: 19h17z.

Hint: Plan to route approximately 3Nm to the north of the target area (De Brug) in order to perform a pitch and dive to the right to be exactly on the target. The target will be some old military tanks and vehicles.

Perform three passes on the target, then reform and recover to AFB Bloemspruit (FABL).

Debrief Operation "Palmtree"

A bit disappointing that there were only four SAVAF pilots who reported for duty at Waterkloof for the mission. However it was a warm welcome to the SAVAF's newest Pilot, 2Lt Gary (Bandit) Joubert who with some trepidation, took to the skies with the "old dogs". Great fun and a lot of concentration was had, with the pilots keeping close formation throughout the mission even in the pre-dawn darkness.

General Jan (Smokey) Jacobs' faultless navigation and timing skills brought the squadron of howling Grippens over the target at De Brug at exactly the right time to impress the visiting Foreign Dignitaries.

After the bombing run at De Brug Range, the squadron headed off to AFB Bloemspruit (not without some shenannigans along the way!! ) to land safely at AFB Bloemspruit.

Thank you to the pilots who took part:

ZAV32 Maj Genl Jan (Smokey) Jacobs
ZAV64 Col Eddy (Phantom) Evans
ZAV70 Lt Col NIco (Sidewinder) Engelbrecht
ZAV94 2Lt Gary (Bandit) Joubert.
