On Line Evening 19 Nov 2013

OPERATION “GLACIER”

Background:

It has been bitterly cold in the Antarctic, with large storms being encountered, and no aircraft have been able to get through to drop off supplies at some of the stations. Their provisions are running desperately low and they have appealed to anyone who can to assist.

As per usual, the ever keen SAVAF has agreed to assist with supply drops. All of the supplies were transported as far as Teniente R Marsh Martin base, but they need to be moved on to Petrel, Base Marambio and Palmer Station. It is the SAVAF’s mission to achieve this.

Objective:

Take off from Teniente (SCRM) and drop off supplies at Petrel (NZ0A), Base Marambio (SAWB) and Palmer Station (NZ0B).

Orders:

Scramble from Teniente R Marsh Martin (SCRM).
Fly on a heading of approximately 126* and 109 Nm to Petrel (NZ0A), and land there.
Once offloaded, take off and fly heading approximately 183* and 46Nm to Base Marambio (SAWB) and land.
When offloading is complete, take off and fly heading approximately 240* and 194Nm to Palmer Station (NZ0B) and land there.
Note:The landing strips at these locations are very, very treacherous! If you are not careful, you will end up in the icy Antarctic waters! Exercise caution when landing!

Debrief: Operation Glacier.

Five pilots reported for duty at a very cold and dark Teniente Base for duty. Take off was a tad late at 18h13z, but all successfully got airborne and routed to Petrel.

The weather and light improved, and the flight landed safely at Petrel for the first cargo drop. Thereafter it was off to Marambio, where the next lot of supplies were offloaded, and finally on to Palmer Station for the final drop.

All landed safely at Palmer Station.

Some hairy landings and scary moments in the bad cloud was experienced, but overall a very successful flight.

Thank you to the pilots who took part:
